The Ian Potter Foundation Children’s Garden - Melbourne
The Ian Potter Foundation Children’s Garden sets the standard for nature-based play. Designed entirely with children in mind, the garden invites young explorers to discover what’s around every corner—whether it’s through the gorge, beneath the forest canopy, or along winding pathways. With landscapes that encourage climbing, jumping, crawling, and exploring, it’s a joyful experience for both children and their carers.
This unique garden is significant because it:
Encourages hands-on learning: Children engage with flora and fauna through diverse forms, textures, and colors, all within a child-friendly scale and interconnected spaces.
Features an active kitchen garden: A living demonstration of the growing cycle, from planting to harvest, offering insight into sustainable food practices.
Fosters community and connection: Designed as a welcoming space for families to gather, promoting intergenerational learning and the sharing of knowledge.
It’s more than just a garden—it’s a space where curiosity grows and connections flourish.
Please note that this area is only open between Wednesday and Sunday each week (plus all Victorian school and public holidays). For 8 weeks during winter, this area is closed.
Flinders Waffle - Melbourne
At the Flinders end of bustling Degraves Street, you’ll find the sweetest little waffle shop in town—Flinders Waffles! Famous for serving Melbourne’s first Taiyaki soft serve and their viral Flinders St Station waffles, it’s the ultimate pit stop for a sugar fix when you’re in the city.
What’s Taiyaki, you ask? It’s a traditional Japanese fish-shaped cake, cooked in a special mould that gives it a big, open mouth—perfect for stuffing with delicious fillings. At Flinders Waffles, you can choose from custard, Nutella, or red bean, all topped with a rotating menu of creamy soft serve flavors.
From tangy yuzu and earthy matcha to classic strawberry and vanilla, the flavor combinations are endless and yummy to match. Don’t forget to add the finishing touch—rainbow sprinkles, Biscoff crumbs, or mini mochi.

Southbank Boulevard Play Space | Southbank , Melbourne
At first glance, it might look like a construction site left unfinished—uneven surfaces, no smooth handrails, and plenty of spots that demand a watchful eye. But that’s exactly the idea. This playground is all about adventure, challenge, and a little bit of risk.
Boulders dominate the space, and everything is designed for climbing. From wooden beams and steel ladders to ropes, slacklines, and hidden handholds, there’s no shortage of ways to test agility and bravery. Look closely, and you’ll even spot quirky little surprises tucked into cracks and under rocks—who knew bubblegum could hold things together?
Of course, not everything is rough and rugged. The flooring is actually rubber matting (though it takes a second to adjust to its slight bounce), and there are a few classic elements like swings, slides, and a sandy play area.
This playground isn’t for the faint-hearted, but if you’ve got little daredevils, be warned—you might have a hard time getting them to leave!
There’s never a bored moment in Melbourne for the family. From yakult yoghurt drink tours to visiting exciting playgrounds such as the Southbank Boulevard Play space, your family would be guaranteed a great weekend , either chilling at the playground or visiting the outdoor gardens while enjoying the viral Insta-worthy, Flinders Waffle while taking a picture with the Flinders Street backdrop 🙂
